Reading a ceramic tile spec sheet: the numbers that actually matter

Ceramic tile has been a building material for thousands of years, and its popularity in modern homes shows no sign of fading. It resists water, wear, heat, and stains better than almost any alternative. But the sheer variety on the market today, in formats, finishes, and price points, makes choosing the right tile more confusing than it should be. Most buyers pick on looks alone, then wonder later why one floor scratches while another holds up for decades.

The secret is that a tile’s real performance is printed right on its spec sheet. Learn to read four or five numbers and you will choose better than almost anyone shopping on appearance alone.

Start with the PEI wear rating

The PEI rating measures how well a glazed tile resists surface abrasion. It runs from Group 1, suitable only for walls, up to Group 5, built for heavy commercial traffic. This single number should drive your choice more than color or pattern.

For a residential bathroom floor, Group 3 is usually enough. For a busy kitchen or an entryway that meets winter boots and road salt, Group 4 is the safer bet. Putting a low-rated decorative tile in a high-traffic hallway is a common and expensive mistake. The tile looks fine for a year, then the glaze dulls in the walking path and the whole floor looks tired.

A good  ceramic floor supplier lists the PEI rating right alongside the product, which lets you match the tile to the room before you fall in love with a finish that cannot handle the use.

Water absorption tells you where a tile belongs

The second number to check is water absorption, expressed as a percentage. It divides tile into broad categories. Non-vitreous tile absorbs the most water and belongs indoors on walls. Vitreous and impervious tiles, including most porcelain, absorb very little and can go almost anywhere, including wet areas and, in the right climate, outdoors.

This matters more than people realize in a place with hard freezes. A tile that absorbs water and then freezes will crack as the trapped moisture expands. For any exterior or semi-exterior application, impervious porcelain is the only responsible choice. Indoors, absorption still influences how a tile handles a wet bathroom versus a dry bedroom.

Porcelain versus standard ceramic

The terms get used loosely, but there is a real distinction. Porcelain is fired at higher temperatures from denser clay, which makes it harder, less porous, and more durable. Standard ceramic is softer, easier to cut, and often cheaper.

Neither is universally better. Porcelain wins for floors, wet areas, and anywhere durability matters most. Standard ceramic is perfectly good for walls and lighter-duty applications, and its easier cutting can be a blessing for a first-time DIY installer. Choosing between them comes down to the demands of the specific surface, not prestige.

Rectified edges and why they change the look

Here is a detail that separates a crisp modern install from a dated one. Rectified tiles have edges mechanically ground to a precise size, which allows very thin grout lines and a nearly seamless surface. Non-rectified tiles have slightly irregular edges and need wider grout lines to absorb the variation.

If you want the contemporary look of large-format tile with minimal grout, rectified is the way to go. It costs a little more and demands a flatter substrate and careful installation, since thin grout lines forgive nothing. For a more traditional look or an easier install, standard edges work fine with a normal grout joint.

Format and the illusion of space

Tile size shapes how a room feels. Large formats, like 24 by 24 or 24 by 48, create fewer grout lines and make a space read as bigger and calmer. They suit open, modern rooms. Smaller tiles and mosaics add texture and grip, which is why they still rule shower floors where slip resistance counts.

Larger tiles demand a very flat substrate. Any dip in the subfloor shows up as lippage, where one tile edge sits higher than its neighbor. On an uneven floor, a self-leveling compound may be needed before installation. This is one reason grand-format tile, while beautiful, is not always the easy choice it appears to be.

Slip resistance for wet and busy areas

For bathroom floors, kitchens, and entryways, the coefficient of friction matters. A glossy tile that looks stunning in the showroom can turn treacherous when wet. Manufacturers publish slip-resistance figures, and textured or matte finishes generally offer better grip than high-gloss surfaces.

The trade-off is cleaning. More texture grips better but also traps a little more dirt. In a shower or an entry, prioritize grip. In a low-moisture living space, appearance can take the lead.

Don’t forget the installation materials

Choosing the right tile is only half the decision. The materials that hold it down and fill the joints determine whether that carefully chosen floor lasts. Skimping here undoes everything the spec sheet promised.

Start with the mortar, or thinset. Large-format and porcelain tiles need a mortar rated for their weight and low absorption, often a modified thinset. Using a bargain-basement adhesive under a heavy tile invites cracks and hollow spots down the road. Brands like Mapei and Schluter exist because the chemistry of adhesion is not a place to economize.

Grout choice matters too. Sanded grout suits wider joints, unsanded works for thin lines, and epoxy grout resists stains and moisture better in demanding wet areas. The grout color also shapes the final look as much as the tile itself, so it deserves a deliberate choice rather than a default.

Finally, an uncoupling or waterproofing membrane protects the tile from substrate movement and moisture, especially over concrete or in wet rooms. This hidden layer prevents the cracks that ruin an otherwise perfect floor. Budgeting for these support materials from the start, rather than treating them as an afterthought, is what separates a floor that lasts decades from one that fails in a few years.

Bringing the numbers together

Choosing ceramic tile well is a matter of matching a handful of measurable properties to the room. Check the PEI rating for the traffic. Check water absorption for the climate and moisture. Decide between porcelain and ceramic based on durability needs. Consider rectified edges and format for the look you want, and mind slip resistance in wet zones.

Do this and you will avoid the most common regrets: the scratched hallway, the cracked patio tile, the slippery bathroom, the uneven large-format floor. The spec sheet is not marketing. It is the honest description of what a tile can do. Spend ten minutes with it before you spend hundreds on the tile, and your floor will still look right long after the trend that inspired it has passed.
