How to Choose the Right Flooring Material for Your Space

As it stands, the number of flooring materials available extends into the double digits. All of these have something to offer but have downsides as well. So, you’re probably wondering: how do you pick the right flooring material?

There are a number of things to consider when choosing between flooring options. We’re going to discuss these things in detail below.

Think About What the Space Is Used For

First and foremost, think about what the space is used for. Is it simply an office space? Do your small children play in the space? Or, maybe it’s an exercise or fitness room?

If it’s a kids’ playroom, it might be best served by carpet. If it’s an office, hardwood, vinyl, or laminate might serve you best. A fitness room? Spongy, high-traction flooring would be appropriate.

Each flooring option has its pros and cons. You need to assess these pros and cons and determine how they jibe with your space in question.

Consider Your Budget

You, of course, must also consider your budget. After all, you can’t spend what you don’t have.

While there are some low-cost floor replacement materials, there are some high-cost options as well. Most fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

Carpet, for instance, is the cheapest flooring material there is. Hardwood, on the other hand, will cost you a pretty penny, both in terms of the initial purchase price and maintenance costs over time.

Then there are materials like vinyl and hybrid (learn more about Vinyl Vs Hybrid). These are fairly reasonably priced but not particularly cheap either.

Laminate falls on the cheap end of the spectrum. Granite and other stone materials are extremely expensive, though they do last a long time.

Do your research and find a material that fits your budget. There’s sure to be one that suits you both functionally and financially.

How Much Maintenance Are You Willing to Do?

Different flooring materials require different levels of maintenance. Whereas some only need to be swept and cleaned from time to time, others need to be stained, sealed, and/or painted.

Take vinyl and laminate, for example. These materials scarcely get dirty and are incapable of staining; plus, they hold up fairly well against water. As such, they don’t need much maintenance at all.

Hardwood, on the other hand, is highly susceptible to water damage and therefore needs to be sealed every 5 years or so. Carpet is highly susceptible to staining, and therefore requires professional carpet cleaning from time to time.

Remember, maintenance costs not just time but money. Therefore, it’s important to assess both your budget and your personal preferences before choosing a flooring material.

Have you chosen your ideal flooring material? If so, it’s time to take action and buy it. You can find all types of flooring materials both online and inside home improvement stores.
